History: A summary of the story of the orginal Othar Trygvassen, Gentleman Adventurer, can be found here at the Girl Genius wiki. Basically, he's a profession hero—and secret Spark—whose secret goal in life is to kill all the Sparks in Europa and then kill himself, since he's a Spark too. As for Othar Trygvassen, Gentleman Victor...

Once upon a time, a little boy in District Seven waited in the square while the votes were being tallied for the Quarter Quell. His name was Othar, he nearly was five years old and his ma was having her baby. She'd gone into labor while in line to cast her vote, so Othar's pa had chivvied her off to the healer's and told Othar to wait where he was. Othar, like any little boy of five who had been told to wait, got bored and wandered over to where the district's escort was resting. Like any child would, he started asking questions about why everyone was voting and why there were Games and other such matters—he'd been too small to really understand about the Games the year before—and because the escort liked children well enough and was bored himself, he told Othar about the Dark Days and the Treaty of the Treason and the terrible crimes the Districts had perpetuated against the Capitol. The Escort's father had died when the districts rebelled and he believed in the righteous purpose of the Games. And by the end of their conversation, little Othar did as well.

And little Othar decided what he really wanted to do when he got bigger was to kill tributes for the Capitol. Although he was from Seven, which wasn't a Career district in the least, he thought that if he spent the rest of his childhood training himself for the Games, he'd be ready in case he was reaped. And if he didn't get reaped, then he'd decided he'd Volunteer his last year at the reaping. As it happened, his name got pulled eleven years later, when he was almost sixteen. (Othar wasn't surprised that it had been, as he'd been taking tesserae as soon as he qualified to up his odds.)

Othar was ecstatic! Finally he could go to the Capitol and fulfill his self-appointed mission: to see to the deaths of all the tributes in the arena! His cheerful mood regarding his reaping creeped out his district mate and worried his mentor, but for the Capitol citizens it was infectious. Othar became almost immediately popular for his good humor, cheer, and pleasant manners--especially after his pre-game interview where he dubbed himself a “Gentleman Tribute.” An amazingly high score of 11 only made him seem more and more the destined Victor of the arena, Career Tributes or no Career Tributes.

Because of this the young mentor from District Three—who himself was hardly any older than Othar—told his very young tributes to try to go after Othar first, because Othar would be their greatest enemy. And indeed, the two Threes did try to attack Othar immediately after they were let off their pillars. The boy had his neck broken for his pains. However, instead of immediately inflicting the same on the girl, Othar grabbed her hand and pulled her out into the woods with him—because every hero needs a spunky girl sidekick, don't they? And Othar considered himself to be a hero.

Together Othar and his spunky girl sidekick managed to bump off a good amount of the other Tributes. Although she distrusted him at first, the girl from three gradually became fond of Othar because he was after all very impressive. Although her mentor sent her poison to kill Othar with, she didn't use it, for she was under the impression that Othar's plan was to help her win the games. It wasn't. Once they were the last two tributes left in the game, Othar decreed they would have a picnic to celebrate. He dosed the girl from Three's meal with the poison her mentor had sent her (which he'd long since acquired) and once he was sure that she was indeed good and dead, he ate the poisoned food himself. After all, his mission wasn't just to ensure that just the other tributes died—Othar himself was a tribute, so he would have to die too.

The Capitol, as one would suspect, was not happy with this at all. The hovercraft descended in record time and Othar's stomach was immedately pumped. He got a stern talking to by the Gamemakers about his little stunt. The President was brought in as well, though the man quickly realized that Othar wasn't rebellious, just crazy. Coincidentally, a few there was an accident in his home town that resulted in his house burning down with his ma and pa in it. Only his little sister remained, as she'd been staying at a friend's house at the time of the fire. The Capitol took her into custody, where she was adopted by a family named Wilhelm. Othar got to visit her regularly once he started behaving better.

And he did become a model of good behavior—a true Gentleman Victor, as he liked to call himself. His Talent ended up pretty much being himself, as he ended up playing himself in a variety of “reality” television shows and movies for the Capitol. His shooting schedule doesn't always allow him to mentor, but when it does he uses his charm to get a lot of sponsors for his Sevens. To this day, he has a heated rivalry with that District Three mentor whose tributes he killed.

It's just a pity, he thinks, that he wasn't able to finish his mission.

Presentation:

Othar's whole schtick is that he's a Gentleman Victor and Professional Adventurer. It's how he presents himself on his tv show and it's how he presents himself to the world. He's suave, he's friendly, and he's always the soul of courtesy when there is a lady present. You could say that he's jolly—or at least quite jovial. He's always eager to meet new people (and give them and autograph if he wants to.) He's a fun Victor, not a Gloomy Gus like certain Mentors coughcough Sherlock Holmes cough.

Othat believes himself to be the hero of his own story—and everyone else's—and so accordingly acts the hero. He's one for making grand statements—for running off into 'danger'—for taking swift, decisive action if he sees a problem brewing. This isn't just when the cameras are running—this is in Othar's every day life. Any attempt from another Mentor to inform him that no, actually, killing a bunch of other kids for the Capitol wasn't actually heroic will result in blank stares.

Physically, Othar is an imposing figure. Well over six foot tall, he's spent his time out of the arena bulking up so he's even more of a brick wall than he was when he was in his Games. No steroids either, just clean living. He's in his early fifties, but his body is one of a man ten years younger. Othar is also one of those people with hair so palely blonde it almost appear white—and in fact, any grey hairs he does have blend in very nicely with the rest of it. He almost always wears a visor with red lens. He considers it his trademark.

Motivations:

Othar Trygvassen is basically a sociopath. A sociopath who believes in living life as if everyday is an adventure and who enjoys the hell out of being a gentleman but still. A sociopath. He's a fun guy to hang out with and he himself might think he likes you, but the truth is that no matter how much he thinks he likes you, he'll still sell you out in a heartbeat if it's to his benefit and with no remorse whatsoever. He'll probably even smile cheerfully when he kills you. (His “spunky sidekick” from District Three learned this the hard way during the 36th Hunger Games.)

And four decades later, he still believes in his mission: to ensure the death of as many tributes as possible, because the Districts really do deserve what's coming to them. It doesn't matter that Othar himself is a district man, a former tribute. He ought to have died too. He's been persuaded that he's better kept alive as a symbol of the Capitol's mercy—but it's not really by choice. He honestly regrets that his suicide was stopped, though he realizes now that no one would have understood why, that they'd have interpreted it as an anti-Capitol statement and not the act of deep loyalty that Othar sees it as.

He doesn't mind doing the Mentoring job when it's his turn. When he has a tribute with potential, he does his best to make them deadly, but when his tributes fail and die—and due to the structure of the games at least one of them always does—it doesn't upset him. It just means that District Seven paid off its blood debt again that year.

Because of this, the new tributes system really confuses him. These people aren't from the Districts. They didn't betray the Capitol. Why are they here? What purpose are they even serving? He won't let people know that he's puzzled, though. Othar Trygvassen, GENTLEMAN VICTOR, is supposed to be on top of things after all.

SAMPLES
Thread: Musebox thread (Note: due to dumbness, I accidentally used Othar's canon account for some of these, oops)

Prose:

Othar is smiling.

That's the first thing the Gamemakers will notice when he enters the room. He's grinning from ear-to-ear. Othar Trygvassen, GENTLEMAN VICTOR, is fucking ecstatic that he's been hauled up in front of the Gamemakers so that he can once again be thrust into the arena in order to fight to the death.

He doesn't stop grinning the entire time he spends demonstrating his current condition—better than any man his age has a right to be in, although not quite as good as when he was first a tribute—and his weapons prowess—expert and extensive—and his ability to set traps and poison. He thinks pleasantly about his first games, about that sweet little girl from District Three who taught him those skills. She'd hardly been older than his sister when they'd played together.

“Gentleman,” he says at the end as he bows. “I am so very grateful to be given the opportunity to play in the Hunger Games. It is my self-appointed mission to make sure not one tribute leaves the arena alive.” Including himself. Surely, surely he'll be able to finish his mission, to finally give himself the execution that he, as a tribute, so rightfully deserves.

Won't he?

What is your character scored: Othar probably scored around a 9 or 10 this time, despite his age. As noted in the prose sample, he's in really good condition for a man his age and he's very strong. He's been in the games before and he knows how things work, plus he's kept his fighting and survival skills intact. Unlike many of the mentors, he's not addicted to anything. Also, he's a sociopath and will have no problem killing anybody, even people he's friendly with.

Past victor:

Othat's arena was basically your bog-standard forest arena with mountains and a lake. What made his Hunger Games interesting wasn't the setting, but the alliances formed during said games. You see, the young District Three mentor had directed his two tributes (a boy of fourteen and a girl of twelve) to try to kill Othar at the Cornucopia before anything else, because he recognized that Othar Trygvassen was more sociopathic than even a Career. Because they respected him, the two Threes did as their mentor instructed. It didn't go as planned. Othar broke the boy's neck and for a moment it looked like he'd do the same to the girl. Then he smiled at her, asked if she wanted to be his spunky sidekick, and when she managed to squeak out 'yes' Othar grabbed her hand, leading her through the fray, managing to pick up a backpack of supplies for each of them and a knife for him, and protecting her by stabbing one more tribute through the stomach when it looked like one of the older girls was going to drive a spear through her gut.

Once they were away from the Cornucopia, Othar told the girl that she reminded him of his little sister, who was eleven. Together they started setting up traps to catch the other tributes. Othar was charming, kind and gentlemanly to the young girl and she found herself wanting to trust him. In truth, she was starting to get the tiniest crush on him. Her mentor, meanwhile, was going mad with frustration. Couldn't she see that Othar was using her? He managed to scrape up enough assi to send her a vial of poison, with the instructions to use it on Othar. But the little girl from three was hesitant now. Othar was almost her friend.

That was when Othar found out about the poison. He didn't yell or shout or break the little girl's neck, however, although he did confiscate the vial. He sat down with her and told her about his mission: that he was there to ensure the death of all the other tributes, before killing himself. The girl from three was startled, because it sounded like Othar was planning to help her win. She asked him if he was serious. He told her he'd never been more serious about something in his life. His eyes were sincere. She knew he was telling the truth.

Together, Othar and his sidekick managed to kill a whopping six tributes together, some by the traps they laid together, most by the avalanche they started above the Career tribute camp. Soon enough, they really were the only two left in the arena. Othar declared it was time for them to have a picnic to celebrate their triumph! And so they did. It was a beautiful television moment, the gentleman tribute and his spunky sidekick having a picnic lunch near the buried corpses of the career tributes.

Then Othar's sidekick keeled over, dead. He'd poisoned her share of the food, using the vial that the District Three mentor had sent her. You see, she was still a tribute. Ensuring the death of all the tributes meant ensuring hers as well. Othar explained this to her corpse, stroking her hair, and then started to eat the rest of the food from her plate, so that he too could die.

The Gamemakers freaked out and sent the hovercrafter down faster than really was advisable for safety, in order to pump out Othar's stomach. Between this and only ingesting a half-dose, they managed to save his life. However, they were not happy with Othar in the least. Not very long after, his family's house in District Seven burnt down, killing all of his family except for his little sister, who'd been playing at a friends' house. The sister was taken into “protective custody.” The president himself came to talk to Othar in order to give him veiled threats about what might happen to her, which is when he found out that far from trying to foment rebellion, Othar was just way too enthusiastic about trying to help the Capitol. The president explained that Othar had been left alive as proof of the Capitol's mercy, that if he'd died that would have defeated the purpose. Othar eventually came to accept this explanation, albeit grudgingly. His little sister was released from custody and adopted out to a good Capitol family named the Wilhelms, with Othar given frequent visitation rights.

In the years since, Othar has been a model victor. His television show gets great ratings and provides a lot of licensed material for the Gamemakers to make money off of. He's handsome and gentlemanly enough that he's frequently bid upon and is very willing to use his body for the sake of the Capitol, especially if the sponsor in question is willing to take a guest role on his show. (Actually, quite a few sponsors have bid on him in order to get their child a chance to play Othar's sidekick for a couple weeks on the show.) He believes in the Capitol whole-heartedly. It's not even that he's believing in the Capitol and the Games because his brain can't handle the idea that he might have murdered all those other kids for nothing like with Jack Atlas. He just believes that the Hunger Games are true and good and right. He has no regrets whatsoever for anything he did during his games. It was his job.

Past victor AU:

Othar is from District Seven! It's very pretty—all that forest—and the food (Scandanavian-ish) is very good. He likes that part of his district. He doesn't really feel a connection to the people there, but to be honest he doesn't really feel a connection to anyone, not even in the Capitol, as much as he believes in the Capitol. What he doesn't like about his district was that it, along with the others, was part of the rebellion. He doesn't like the idea that his ancestors betrayed the Capitol.

Hunger Games AU and OC: If the Gamemakers decided to scoop up canon Othar, they probably decided that if one bad-ass, gentlemanly sociopath was good, two would be even better. Othar was a popular tribute in his day and a popular victor afterward. Another Othar would definitely please the audience. As far as Othar himself goes, he'd be intensely flattered that the Capitol would want to send another him in to play in the games and he would take the first chance he could get to inform Other Othar about the Mission.
